Just like the food we put in our bodies, the things we put ON our bodies have incredible effects on our health and wellness. Shampoos, lotions, foundations, etc can actually be very harmful. Ingredients in them have been linked to so many crazy things like hormonal disruptions and even cancer. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably rolling your eyes right now because “everything can cause cancer”. I know there are lots of studies with lots of different perspectives and opinions, but it is ignorant to believe that the things you put on your skin and in your hair (which goes directly into your bloodstream) doesn’t affect your health in any way.
GUYS. I am so excited to share this blog post with you today. I’m going on two years of being vegan, and still have so much to learn. But a dear new friend of mine, Johanna, has been vegan for TEN. YEARS. Can you believe that?! You can find all kinds of fun vegan recipes, mindful encouragement, and just pretty aesthetics on her Instagram account, linked below! For those of you that have ever thought about making the change, found it difficult to stick with, or just want to ease your curious mind, keep reading! I’ll be adding commentary of course, because like, I am who I am.
Today has been HUGE.
The coffee giant, Starbucks, has announced a plan to stop using single use plastic straws by 2020.
Emily Alexander set out to design a lid that would showcase the delicious cold foam the company introduced in the U.S. this year. Little did she know, that her team’s design would help reduce “more than 1 billion plastic straws per year” from Starbucks stores. You can read their full statement here.
Speaking of plastic, this month Seattle’s plastic ban took full effect. Last year, the city introduced an ordinance that would ban plastic straws and utensils in the city, requiring business to provide recyclable, compostable, or no dining utensils at all. Many business hopped on board already, but it’s in full effect this month. Want to know more? Read what the Seattle Times had to say.
Another INCREDIBLE win for world,
Canada has banned animal testing for cosmetics! Following after Norway, India, Israel, and the entire European Union, Canada’s Senate just passed Bill S-214, the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act. Basically, the bill states that animal testing and the sale of cosmetics developed or manufactured using animal testing is prohibited in the country.
With a giant push from Canadian cruelty-free companies like Lush and The Body Shop paired with public outcry, things are moving in a positive direction! Although a date hasn’t been set, it’s safe to say that it won’t be too long until the bill becomes law.
We still have a long way to go when it comes to taking better care of planet and those living on it. But hopefully news like this can serve as a source of encouragement! Enjoy these linked videos of animals experiencing life outside of the lab/captivity for the first time.
Keep fighting the good (plastic and cruelty free) fight!
